The major branches at a glance

Computer Engineering / IT

Software, AI/ML, data science, web and cybersecurity. Highest demand and placements today. Ideal if you enjoy coding and logical problem-solving.

Electronics & Telecommunication (E&TC) / Electronics & Computer

Embedded systems, VLSI, communication and IoT — a bridge between hardware and software. Flexible: many E&TC graduates also move into software roles.

Mechanical Engineering

Design, manufacturing, thermal, robotics and automotive. The broadest “core” branch with roles across industries — great for hands-on thinkers.

Civil Engineering

Structures, infrastructure, transportation and construction management. Strong scope in infrastructure-driven economies and government projects.

A simple framework to decide

  1. Interest: Which subjects genuinely excite you — coding, circuits, machines or structures?
  2. Aptitude: Are you stronger at abstract logic (CS/IT) or physical/applied concepts (Mech/Civil)?
  3. Scope & placements: Research placement trends of the specific college, not just the branch name.
  4. College over branch (sometimes): A core branch at a top college can beat a trending branch at a weak one.
Don’t pick a branch only because friends or relatives suggest it. Four years is a long time to study something you dislike.
