Engineering Admission Process in Maharashtra: Step-by-Step
After MHT-CET, admission to first-year engineering (FE) in Maharashtra happens through the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) conducted by the DTE / State CET Cell. Here is the entire journey, step by step, with the official links you’ll need. (We’ve deliberately left out exact dates — always confirm the current schedule on the official portal.)
Step 1 — Appear for MHT-CET & get your score
Your MHT-CET percentile (PCM group for engineering) is the primary basis for admission. Keep your scorecard and application ID safe. New to the exam? Start with our free MHT-CET MCQs & mock tests and this study plan.
Step 2 — Register for CAP on the admission portal
Create an account on the FE CAP portal and fill your personal, academic, category and exam details. Choose your candidature type (Maharashtra State, All-India, etc.) carefully — it decides your eligibility and seat type.
Step 3 — Upload documents & complete verification
Upload the required documents for e-verification (or visit a Facilitation Centre if asked). Typical documents include:
- MHT-CET scorecard & admit card
- Std X and Std XII marksheets
- Nationality/domicile proof (School Leaving / Domicile certificate)
- Aadhaar card
- Category certificate, caste-validity & non-creamy-layer (if applicable)
- EWS / TFWS / PWD / defence / minority documents (if applicable)
A clean, verified application is the foundation for everything that follows.
Step 4 — Provisional merit list & grievances
The CET Cell publishes a provisional merit list based on your score and category. Check every detail; if something is wrong, raise a grievance within the given window. After corrections, the final merit list is released.
Step 5 — Fill the CAP option form (most important step)
You submit a preference list of college + branch choices. Fill it strategically:
- Dream → realistic → safe: aspirational choices at the top, safe options at the bottom — and add plenty of options.
- Use previous-year cutoffs to judge each choice against your percentile.
- Order by genuine preference — the system allots the highest choice you qualify for.

Step 6 — Seat allotment: Freeze, Float or Slide
After each CAP round you get an allotment and choose:
- Freeze — accept and keep this seat.
- Float — keep it, but try for a better option in the next round.
- Slide — stay in the same college, try for a better branch.
Step 7 — Report to the institute & confirm admission
Report to your allotted college within the deadline, pay fees and submit originals to confirm your seat. Missing this step can cancel your allotment.
Steps 8+ — Further CAP rounds, betterment & spot rounds
Multiple CAP rounds (Round 1, 2, 3) run in sequence, followed by institute-level / spot rounds for vacant seats. If you have a seat but want a better one, understand the betterment rules before floating a secured seat.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Filling too few options and going unallotted.
- Ordering by cutoff instead of by true preference.
- Missing document, fee or reporting deadlines.
- Floating a good seat and ending with a worse one.
