First Year Engineering (FE) Foundation Guide — Mumbai & Pune University
First Year Engineering (FE) is the foundation of your entire degree. It is deliberately kept common to all branches — whether you’re in Computer, Mechanical, Civil or E&TC, everyone studies the same core science, maths and basic-engineering subjects in Year 1. Get this year right and every later semester becomes easier. This guide explains the FE subjects at Mumbai University and Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), what each one actually teaches, and how to build rock-solid basics.
Why the foundation year matters so much
- Every branch subject is built on FE. Signals, structures, thermodynamics, algorithms — all of them lean on the maths and physics you learn now.
- Your CGPA starts here. FE marks count toward your final aggregate, and a strong start is far easier to maintain than to recover.
- You learn how to study engineering — problem-solving, labs, journals, vivas and time management — skills you’ll use for four years.
- It’s where good habits form: attending labs seriously, keeping journals updated, and clearing backlogs before they pile up.
Mumbai University — First Year (FE) subjects
Mumbai University keeps FE common across branches, split over two semesters with theory subjects, labs and skill/audit courses. The typical foundation subjects are:
| Semester I | Semester II |
|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics I | Engineering Mathematics II |
| Engineering Physics I | Engineering Physics II |
| Engineering Chemistry I | Engineering Chemistry II |
| Engineering Mechanics | Engineering Graphics / Drawing |
| Basic Electrical & Electronics Engineering | C Programming / Structured Programming |
| Workshop / Basic Workshop Practice | Professional Communication & Ethics / Skill labs |
Exact subject names and split can vary slightly by scheme (e.g. Rev-2019 ‘C’ scheme vs the newer NEP-aligned structure). Always cross-check the official FE syllabus for your admission year.
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) — First Year (FE) subjects
SPPU’s 2024-pattern FE is also common to all branches and follows a similar science + basic-engineering foundation, with induction and skill components:
| Semester I | Semester II |
|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics I | Engineering Mathematics II |
| Engineering Physics | Engineering Chemistry |
| Basic Electrical Engineering | Basic Electronics Engineering |
| Engineering Mechanics | Programming & Problem Solving (C) |
| Engineering Graphics | Systems in Mechanical Engineering / Engineering Exploration |
| Workshop Practice + Induction Program | Project-Based Learning / Skill & Audit courses |
SPPU pairs some subjects differently across the two semesters and includes an induction program and project-based learning. Confirm your exact structure on the official SPPU 2024-pattern FE syllabus.
What each core subject teaches (and why it matters)
- Engineering Mathematics I & II: calculus, matrices, differential equations, complex numbers, multiple integrals. This is the language of engineering — it powers signals, control, structures and ML later.
- Engineering Physics: oscillations, waves, optics, semiconductors, quantum basics. Foundations for electronics, materials and communication.
- Engineering Chemistry: water treatment, polymers, corrosion, fuels, electrochemistry. Vital for materials, energy and environmental topics.
- Engineering Mechanics: forces, equilibrium, friction, centroids, kinematics/dynamics. The base of civil, mechanical and structural thinking.
- Basic Electrical & Electronics: circuits, Ohm’s/Kirchhoff’s laws, diodes, transistors, logic gates. Everyone needs this — even software engineers.
- Programming (C): variables, loops, functions, arrays, pointers. Your first real taste of coding and logical problem-solving.
- Engineering Graphics: orthographic & isometric projections, using drawing tools/CAD. Teaches you to visualise and communicate designs.
- Workshop / Skill labs & Communication: hands-on tools, safety, teamwork and professional communication — the ‘soft’ skills that get you hired.
How to build a strong FE foundation (and score well)
- Never let maths & physics slip. They’re cumulative — one weak topic hurts three later subjects. Revise weekly.
- Solve previous-year university papers for each subject; university exams repeat patterns heavily.
- Keep labs & journals up to date. Term work and viva marks are easy scoring if you stay regular — don’t leave them for the last week.
- Learn coding properly in C now — it makes Data Structures and every later programming subject far easier. Practise on our DSA & coding practice.
- Clear backlogs immediately. A first-year KT is easy to clear now and painful to carry later.
- Start exploring branches & careers early so your electives and projects have direction.
Subject names, credits and the semester split are set by each university and revised periodically (Rev-2019, NEP 2024 patterns, etc.). The lists above are indicative — always confirm the official First Year syllabus for your university and admission year.
