GMAT Exam Guide: Steps to Register & Preparation Strategy

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is the management-focused entrance test accepted by business schools worldwide and by top Indian schools like ISB. Run by GMAC, the current GMAT Focus Edition is shorter and sharper than the old format. If your goal is an MBA, this is your test.

1. Quick facts (GMAT Focus Edition)

2. Exam pattern

It’s adaptive. The test adjusts difficulty to your answers, and the Focus Edition lets you bookmark and edit a limited number of answers per section — use this strategically.

3. Step-by-step: how to register

  1. Create an account on mba.com (the official GMAC site).
  2. Choose delivery — online at home or an in-person test centre.
  3. Select a date & time that suits your application deadlines.
  4. Pay the exam fee online.
  5. Prepare using official materials (see the plan below).
  6. Take the exam and choose your section order on test day.
  7. Send scores to your target business schools.

4. A proven 2–3 month preparation strategy

Weeks 1–3 — Diagnose & learn the format

Take an official practice test to get a baseline. Learn each question type — especially Data Insights, which trips up most beginners. Refresh Quant fundamentals.

Weeks 4–8 — Section drills

Work through the Official Guide by section. Focus on Critical Reasoning and Data Sufficiency logic, and build speed in Quant. Track accuracy by question type.

Weeks 9–12 — Adaptive mocks & review

Take full-length adaptive mocks (official GMAT practice exams are the gold standard). Review every wrong answer, especially the reasoning, and refine your timing and section order.
