Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Scholarship: Eligibility, Amount & How to Apply

If your parents are marginal (small land-holder) farmers or registered labourers, or you come from an economically weaker household and stay in a hostel away from home, the Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Vasatigruh Nirvah Bhatta Yojana can give you up to ₹60,000 a year to cover food, hostel and living costs. It’s one of Maharashtra’s most useful — and most under-claimed — student schemes, and you apply for it free on the MahaDBT portal (mahadbt2.maharashtra.gov.in). Here’s everything you need to know.

1. What is this scholarship?

Named after the great social reformer and educationist Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh, this is a hostel maintenance / subsistence allowance (Nirvah Bhatta) scheme of the Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Maharashtra. Unlike a tuition-fee waiver, it gives you a yearly allowance (paid for 10 months) to help with food, residence and daily living expenses while pursuing a recognised professional/technical course such as Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture, MBA/MCA and similar.

Think of it as living-cost support — especially valuable if you’re a hosteller who moved to another city to study.

The scheme runs through several directorates (DTE for engineering/pharmacy/polytechnic, DHE, DOA, MCAER, MAFSU). The eligibility and amounts are essentially the same — engineering students apply under the DTE version.

2. Who is eligible?

Note: This scheme is for Open/General and SEBC-category students (SC/ST/VJNT/OBC have their own, often larger, schemes). Exact category and income rules are set on MahaDBT — always confirm there.

3. How much do you get?

The allowance is paid for 10 months each year and depends on where your college is located. Total benefit ranges from ₹38,000 to ₹60,000 per year:

Allowance Mumbai city & suburbs, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nagpur Other divisional cities & C-class municipal areas Other districts Talukas
Food allowance₹32,000₹28,000₹25,000₹23,000

Subsistence allowance₹8,000₹8,000₹6,000₹5,000

Amounts as per the current MahaDBT scheme page and Government Resolutions. Figures are revised from time to time — always confirm the latest slab for your city on the official portal before relying on a number.

4. Documents to keep ready

5. Step-by-step: how to apply on MahaDBT

  1. Go to MahaDBT — mahadbt2.maharashtra.gov.in and register as a new applicant (Aadhaar + mobile OTP).
  2. Complete your profile — personal, domicile, income and bank details exactly as per documents, and finish Aadhaar authentication / e-KYC.
  3. Find eligible schemes and select “Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Vasatigruh Nirvah Bhatta Yojna” under the relevant directorate (DTE for engineering / pharmacy / polytechnic).
  4. Fill the application — course, college, CAP details, hosteller details and your eligibility basis (farmer / labourer / income).
  5. Upload documents within the size and format limits.
  6. Submit & save the Application ID.
  7. College verification — your institute’s scholarship section verifies it online; follow up if it stays pending.
  8. Track status — once sanctioned, the allowance is credited directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account by DBT.

New/renewal application windows are announced on MahaDBT each academic year — watch the portal notices for the last date.

6. Tips to avoid rejection

Also check the EBC scholarship (tuition-fee waiver) — many students are eligible for both the EBC fee waiver and the Panjabrao Deshmukh maintenance allowance. Combining them can hugely reduce your cost of studying.

Scheme names, income ceilings, city slabs and amounts are revised periodically by the Government of Maharashtra. Treat the details above as indicative and always confirm the current rules on the official MahaDBT portal (mahadbt2.maharashtra.gov.in) before applying.
