ILS Round vs SPOT Round in CAP: What They Are & the Difference

By the time the main Maharashtra engineering CAP rounds (Round I, II and III) are over, many good seats still stay vacant — students don’t report, upgrade, or cancel. Two mechanisms exist to fill those leftover seats: the ILS (Institute Level) round and the SPOT round. Students constantly mix them up. Here’s a clear, side-by-side explanation.

Quick answer: The ILS round is run by the individual college to fill its own vacant/institute-level seats. The SPOT round is a final, mostly centrally-notified round to fill seats that are still vacant after CAP and institute rounds — often open even to candidates who missed earlier rounds.

Where these rounds sit in the CAP timeline

  1. CAP Round I → II → III — centralised, merit-and-preference based allotment on the CET portal.
  2. Institute Level (ILS) Round — colleges fill remaining seats directly.
  3. SPOT / Vacancy Round — the last chance to grab whatever is still empty.

What is the ILS (Institute Level) round?

“ILS” refers to Institute Level Seats. Every approved college has a share of seats it can fill on its own (institute-level quota), and after the CAP rounds any seats left vacant are also reverted to the institute level. In the ILS round:

What is the SPOT round?

The SPOT round (spot admission / final vacancy round) is held when seats are still vacant even after CAP + institute-level rounds. Its defining features:
